It all started with a mouse

Debby van Beek

I think everybody has heard of the place where dreams come true; if not then just take a look at the following website: www.disney.com. I mentioned the following sentence: “a place where dreams come true”. And I can tell you it really is a place where dreams come true. But first something else, because you’re probably wondering how I came to this very special place.

In the first year of Leisure Management at NHTV we had to choose between several specializations and one of them was Leisure Project Management. This specialization has everything to do with big leisure facilities. Before I knew it, my second year had started and during my first few weeks I heard of an opportunity for an internship at Disneyworld Resort in… Orlando. And for me as a big fan of not only the Disney characters but also the movies, it  sounded like I found the perfect place.
As soon as our lecturer of Themepark management made the announcement we could apply for this opportunity, I didn’t wait long to make a choice and applied with a creative story about a princess and her dream prince. Before I knew it I was accepted at this very special specialization. But we weren’t there yet; we needed to make another big step before we could say that we were interns of Disney.

In March 2011 we had our job interview with one of the recruiters from Disney: Regina Maluta. It was a job interview nobody would forget pretty soon. We didn’t immediately hear if we had made it; it took about two weeks before we heard it. At first I wasn’t a lucky one, but one week later I could also say that I was a cast member to be of Disney.

In the next months the most important thing was to prepare for our departing day. This included a visit to the American consulate and of course make enough money to pay for everything.

At the end of January it was time for all of us to say goodbye to our family and friends and create our own memories at Disney World in Orlando. During my placement I will keep a blog for the Insight were you can read all about my experience at Disneyworld Resort Orlando.
